Marking Blood Cancer Awareness Month this September, alongside partners MPN Voice and Novartis UK, the ARC plays host to the immersive ‘Meet the MPN 10’ exhibition outside in St Mungo Square.

The exhibition shines a light on the symptoms of a group of rare blood cancers called myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). The ARC is the next stop on the tour for the 10 giant number sculptures, exclusively designed by five mural artists, with Stirling-born Artist, Ross MacRae, designing numbers 1 and 6.

MPNs are a type of blood cancer that originates in the bone marrow. There are three main types of MPNs: myelofibrosis (MF), essential thrombocythaemia (ET) and polycythaemia (PV). With MPNs affecting around 4,100 people in the UK each year, it's never been more important to be aware of the symptoms. The installation forms part of Novartis and MPN Voice’s campaign ‘Meet the MPN 10’ which features 10 characters that personify the most common symptoms associated with these types of cancers – for example, ‘Night Sweats Nick’ and ‘Weight Loss Wendy’. Visitors to the installation can meet and interact with the characters via an augmented reality (AR) experience triggered by QR codes.

What are MPNs?

MPNs are a group of rare blood cancers originating in the bone marrow. The MPN 10 are the 10 most common symptoms associated with these types of cancer, and they’re a crafty bunch. They know how to disguise themselves, how to blend in and above all how to trick people. Often, these suspicious symptoms are easily confused for other things such as old age or even just feeling a bit under the weather – but it’s important to remember that these symptoms may be connected to MPNs.

If you, or someone you know, is living with an MPN and experiencing any of the MPN 10 symptoms, don’t just put up with them – track them down and speak with a doctor or nurse to get helpful information and practical advice.

Meet the MPN 10 is a disease awareness campaign developed in collaboration with MPN Voice and Novartis. MPN Voice has provided expertise in the development of the campaign; the characters are depicted from real patient quotes provided by MPN Voice. Novartis has approved the associated materials in line with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry Code of Practice.
